History

The Russian is said to originate from the area around the northern Russian city Arkhangelsk, from the Arkhangelsk Islands. Trading people brought these cats in 1860 to Europe. The Russian White, Russian Black, and Russian Tabby are breeds of cat created in 1971, derived from the Russian Blue. The Black and Tabby Russians came from the original mating which created the Russian White. It is appropriate to consider their origins first.

The Russians we now know in South Africa can trace their pedigree’s back to England and Northern Europe, perhaps even to those first seen at a cat show held in England in 1875.

Description

The Russian White, Black and Tabby cats derived from the Russian Blue, so they basically have the same physical characteristics with the only difference in the coat colour. This breed is a nice medium sized cat.

These cats generally friendly and gentle, but like being outdoors, especially at night. Tendency to be greedy and become overweight. The coat of the Russians is soft, plush, silky and dense. It has clear tipping that gives the coat an overall lustrous sheen.

Temperament

The Russians are gentle and affectionate cats that will never get bored entertaining you and your family.

Health

They usually also have poor vision and skin disorders. But in general, t=e Russians are hearty and healthy cats. With proper diet, exercise, veterinary care, and affection, they can live well into their teens and beyond.

Care

Little grooming is necessary. The names of the three breeds suggest the coat colour specific to a particular cat.
