Around the 1900 the hunting activities were restricted to districts and since the hound used till then were to fast for this limited areas it was decided to establish a new type of hound. Using selected specimens of the medium sized Swiss Laufhund a smaller hunting dog was created. On July 1st 1905 the Swiss Niederlaufhund-Club (SNLC) was founded
Berner Laufhund dog has a long head, which is narrow and appears well proportioned with the rest of the body. It has dark eyes, which seem to sport a happy expression. The muzzle is long and narrow and the long ears are set low, towards the back of the head. The nose of the dog is black and follows the color of its coat. The neck doesn’t have much dewlap and is long and prevailing, and its long back is long, straight and firm. Berner Laufhund has straight and strong legs and the hind legs are fairly bent at stifles and longs. The feet are round in shape and thickly padded and the nails are strong. The tail is of a medium length and carried horizontally. The dog has a very balanced movement of the body and a good reach, which makes it fit for hunting.

They are loyal and adore the company of children and the elderly alike. These dogs are a bundle of energy however and they may need to have exercise daily to stop their hyperactive personalities from growing abundant. The Berner Laufhund is a very athletic dog. It needs it share of exercise regularly. They are eager to please and will go to any extent to please their owners. The temperament of the dog is one of softness and ease. They are very mild tempered. Hence they gel well in a gathering. They have a distinctive bark which is loud and sounds dangerous. Hence with their strong built and good bark, they come highly recommended as guard dogs.
