Learn About the Brazilian Shorthair

History

Known aslo as “Pelo Curto Brasileiro”, this is the “street cat” of Brazil, similar to the American Shorthair of North America and the British Shorthair of the United Kingdom. The breed originated from British Shorthaired cats brought by Europeans at the time of Brazil’s colonization by Portugal. The Brazilian Shorthair is Brazil’s first breed to receive international recognition (1998).

Description

Mid-sized felines, Brazilian Shorthairs have a strong physical built. Their body is slender in comparison to shorthair cats of Europe and North America. Head is somewhat long with almond shaped slightly oblique eyes and medium sized ears that are rounded at the tip. Fur is short and close-lying to the body. A variety of colors and patterns are documented. Legs are well muscled. Tail is medium in length and tapering at its end.

Temperament

The Brazilian Shorthair is an affectionate cat, so much so that it is often referred to as clingy. Its best match is an owner who will shower it with attention and love while involving it in the activities of the house. Unlike some breeds, which are typically one-man cats, the Brazilian Shorthair is also open to bonding with, and enjoying the companionship, of everyone in the household. If its demands for affection are not met, this frisky, light-hearted cat’s temperament can become suspicious and irritable. It may even seek a friendlier owner. Because the Brazilian Shorthair is intelligent, it’s a fast learner. An active and playful cat, it is also known for its proud characteristic as an accomplished hunter.

Health

The Brazilian Shorthair is a hardy breed with an average life span of around 13 years. They are susceptible to all the common feline ailments that affect all cats, but no more so than normal. Due their short coats and development in a hot humid area, they tend to be very sensitive to cold weather.

Care

They shed lightly year round and require grooming once a week to keep them neat and tidy.
