Learn About the Ojos Azules
Ojos Azules are a relatively new breed of domestic cat. Cats with dark blue eyes were discovered in New Mexico among feral cat populations. The first cat, discovered in 1984, was a tortoiseshell named Cornflower. She was bred to males without the trait, which proved to be dominant, as all her kittens showed it. Not much is known about the origin of this cat except for the fact that it was first reported in New Mexico in the mid nineteen eighties. The cat is known for its dazzling bright blue eyes. In fact the name Ojos Azules has been taken from Spanish words meaning ‘blue eyes’.
The medium-sized Ojos Azules is known for its bluish eyes, which are large and round. The neck is arched. The tail is proportionate to the cat’s body. The head is somewhat triangular in inscribe. It has a slightly rounded forehead, and an angular muzzle. The nose has a slight break. Coat is short, silky and occurs in a variety of colors and patterns.
It is interesting to note that these rare and newly-found cat breeds are generally found in the wild. Of course, it is usually some time before they are recognized as a breed. It was found that the blue-eyed cats should be bred with a cat with different-colored eyes.
The paw? Well, hind legs slightly longer than forelegs. Medium to fine-boned. Small paws.
The Ojos Azules are a shorthaired breed with an undercoat dense in color. The color of these cats varies to most any color, although a solid white in this breed is undesirable since it can’t be distinguished from other, more common white cats with blue eyes.
Not much is known about the overall behavior and personality of Opus Azules owing to their rarity. Only a handful of the cats existed a decade or so ago. This cat is active, friendly, affectionate, and easy to groom.
After the genetic investigation by Solveig Pflueger, breeding resumed in a small way as attempts to breed Ojos Azules without the deadly genetic defects.
Ojos Azules requires minimal grooming.
