Learn About the Elo
Description
As it is bred with certain specifications in mind, the appearance of the dogs in this breed can vary greatly. Elo dog information that is available does have a standard for the Elo dog breed. It can be about 46 centimeters tall and weigh in a range of 22 to 25 kilograms. The body is generally longer, than taller. This dog even has a long tail with a considerable fur covering. The dog’s coat can be short or medium length and with a dense undercoat. These puppies can have any color, with the combinations of white with brown, black, gray or red being desired colors.
Short History of the Elo
Marita and Heinz Szobries began crossing their Eurasiers and Bobtails (Old English Sheepdogs) in 1987, believing that, although very different in detail, the breeds were of similar type and had arisen as breeds under similar conditions. Dogs from the cross that showed unique characteristics and good health were bred further. Due to the lack of sufficient Eurasiers, a similar breed, the Chow Chow, was added, and later, Samoyeds and Dalmatians were added to expand the genetic base. Breeding has continued with long term focus on the inheritance of character. The name “Elo” (originally Eloschaboro) is from letters of the 3 breeds – Eurasier, Bobtail and Chow-Chow – and is protected by trademark in Germany. Breeding dogs with the name Elo is allowed only with the consent of the founders of the Elo breed.
Temperament
The Elo is a happy type of breed and very dependable to humans. Because they were developed as a perfect family pet, they have the nature to be obedient, entertaining, loyal and most of all endearing to children. They love the attention of people and most of their time is into playful activities such as fetching. With this nature, they are not at its best inside the house or apartment if they have to be on their toes for a longer period. They bring out their energy spending time roaming, running, and playing outside the house or into large yards. While in the course of allowing the Elo to play at outdoor places, they need to be leashed for safety reasons for they have a tendency to wild sometimes and that behavior is seen through their propensity to dig the ground messing the yard and garden.
Caring for Your Elo
General Health
As with all created breeds, the Elo’s small population size results in the risk of inbreeding and its after-effects of inbreeding depression, and frequent occurrence of hereditary diseases. There is a susceptibility to Distichia,[5] in which corneal damage can occur.[6] Part of the process of accepting a dog for breeding is an eye examination (for prevention of Distichia) and X-rays to avoid breeding dogs with hip dysplasia.
Grooming & Bathing
This breed needs brushing and combing since it is a heavy shedder and also to prevent matting of fur. It is also recommended to acquire professional grooming techniques in order to maintain its good physical appearance.
Exercise & Training
As mentioned, the Elo is more comfortable in outdoors so that regular exercises like running, walking, playing, or even digging can take place. A lack of exercise may cause them to be irritable, aggressive, and displaying of inappropriate behavioral problems.
